#FAHRENHEIT 451 ANNOTATIONS HOW TO#
If this skill is new to students, they may need some additional instruction on how to craft a written response that thoroughly evaluates an author or character’s position.Īt Match, students have a Composition class 4 days per week in addition to English class. Additionally, several target tasks in this unit ask the students to evaluate a position or argument. Since providing written feedback on this volume of writing can be prohibitive depending on the number of students a teacher teaches in a day, it is recommended that the teacher place an emphasis on providing enough time for students to respond to the target tasks in class while the teacher can circulate and provide feedback. Students will, therefore, have multiple short at bats at improving their writing on an almost daily basis. The target tasks emphasize short written responses to questions about the literature. They will defend their positions with evidence from the novel, other supplementary texts read in class, as well as their own personal experiences. Students will read, discuss, and take a stand on such issues as censorship, technology, and knowledge. Additionally, close attention will be paid to Bradbury’s use of structure, diction, and figurative language to paint a vivid picture of the life in the society he has created. As they read about the lives of the characters in Bradbury’s dystopian futuristic society, they will explore how he uses the genre of science fiction to convey his messages about humanity, censorship, and technology. He even influenced Montag’s decisions. This unit on Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury marks students’ first exposure to the genre of science fiction at the high school level. He always seemed to tell her stories about books and how life was before the government taking over. My uncle: “My uncle says the two always go together.”Ĭlarisse’s uncle played a major part in the book since she always mentioned him. It’s a big symbol in the book since the firemen are supposed to burn books, and it happens to be a major conflict.
451: “With his symbolic helmet numbered 451 on his stolid head…” 451 is the temperature at what paper burns at, so the book would have less meaning if they didn’t include the temperature as a symbol. The firemen in the book have a different purpose and in contrast, are motivated to start fires and burn instead of stopping them and saving everything.
Firemen: “… they needed firemen to stop the flames.” In the book, the word “firemen” has a total different meaning than expected. At this point, he finally steps back and accepts the fire, and looks at it at a different perspective, hinting that’s his goal for others to come.
It was warming.” Throughout the book, he realizes the true purpose of fire and doesn’t like firemen use it against people. Then towards the end, he feels better when the last fire he encounters beckons him to come forth and meet the people that were waiting there for him. Fire: “The fire was gone, and then back again, like a winking eye.” At first, fire seems like a soothing to his soul because it’s been his job to start it, and towards halfway through the book, he’s afraid of it and doesn’t want to be near it.
